The Crew for the University of Ruined Strawberries

Emmanuel Hernandez

Emmanuel is a former student of mine who is now a graduate of The Art Institute of California in Digital Film and Television studies. He was a very bright student, hilarious, and an exceptional writer. I was overjoyed when I knew he was going to California to pursue his dream in film. One night this past year, I was driving in my little Honda Civic, listening to Nada Surf, and I realized that the only way people could see what I have seen is with their own eyes, and not just in a book, because not enough people read. This message simply had to reach a wider audience. I immediately thought of Emmanuel. I knew I had to find him! I sent out my wavelengths and indeed found him through MySpace. I told him of the concept and he was on board immediately. The film aspect was a huge concern of mine because I refused to "sell" this idea or let anyone make an MTV production out of it, by manipulating footage or exploiting my students. To be able to trust someone, let alone Emmanuel, has been one of the biggest weights lifted. He has far exceeded my expectations and has put together a dream team of a film crew for this mission. We have discussed future collaborations as well. He is so passionate about this project and (I would put "coincidentally" here, but I do not believe in coincidences at this point in my life) is highly qualified, having majored in documentary film. When I speak with him on the phone about the project I get a high and an immense surge of inspiration. I could never have done this without him and I am so honored and thrilled to have his talent, dedication and creativity to this project. I have every ounce of faith, confidence and belief in his work, his art and what he will do for this mission.
